Tarangire National Park

This is probably the most under-rated park in Africa just two hours from Arusha on good roads. The feature of this park is the Tarangire River. During the dry period from June to November a large watering hole draws large herds of elephant. The landscape in the north is dominated by acacia bushes which are interrupted with large Baobab trees. To the south there are plains and swamps which take over the landscape. With over 3500 elephants this park has one of the largest concentrations in Africa. One should also see large herds of buffalo, as well as lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, gazelle, zebras, giraffes and warthogs. Many birds of prey may be seen, and this park is the home to hundreds of other species of birds and butterflies.
